A Mother’s Day Message for Everyone by Joni Ames

I have many favorite passages in the Bible, but having been a single mom since my now 32 & 33 year old children were 4 & 5 years old, there is one that especially stands out to me at Mother’s Day.
First of all, a little known fact is that Jesus’ mother, Mary, probably raised him and the rest of her children as a single mother for many years. Joseph was considerably older than Mary, and the last time Joseph was mentioned is when Jesus was 12 years old and they found him at the Temple. Because of this, the fact that Jesus became a carpenter until the age of 30 indicates that He, as the oldest in His family, took on the family business to work and support Mary and his siblings. Such was the custom of the day when the father/breadwinner would pass on. Next…my favorite passage.
As we move into the book of John, chapter 2, John 2:1 says, “On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.” It goes on to read as follows:
“(2) Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. (3) And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” (4) Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” (5) His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
I so love and can picture that exchange between Jesus and His mother! It speaks volumes to me of their relationship. Basically Jesus jokingly says to His mother’s request, “So what?! You expect ME to do something about it?! I don’t think so!” – And His mother completely ignores that and tells the servants to go ahead and do whatever Jesus tells them. – And Jesus DOES it!
To me, this is a precious account of the mother/son relationship between Jesus and his mom. And along with that, a word for all of us on this Mother’s Day.
We are in precarious times in this Land. The enemy has tried to discourage many. Sometimes it seems like we are stuck with “just plain water” and we feel left out, or “too late” for the “good stuff.” Not so. Just as that wedding occurred in the third day, we are in the third day in time since we crossed over into the third millennium.
In Genesis 1, the third day speaks of a time of fruitfulness and reproduction, not of standing still:
(11) Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. (12) And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (13) So the evening and the morning were the third day.
In Exodus 19:11, the third day speaks of a time of visitation:
“And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.”
In Joshua 9:17, it is a time of being in the right place God has called us to:
“Then the children of Israel journeyed and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kirjath Jearim.”
In Judges 20:20, it is a time of battle:
“And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in battle array against Gibeah as at the other times.”
In 1 Kings 3:18, it is a time of birthing:
“Then it happened, the third day after I had given birth, that this woman also gave birth. And we were together; no one was with us in the house, except the two of us in the house.”
In 1 Kings 12:12, it is a time of returning:
“So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had directed, saying, “Come back to me the third day.”
In 2 Kings 20:5, It is a time of answered prayer, healing, and meeting with the Lord:
“Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord.
In Esther 5:1, it is a time of meeting with the King:
“Now it happened on the third day that Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the king’s palace, across from the king’s house, while the king sat on his royal throne in the royal house, facing the entrance of the house.”
In Hosea 6:2, Matthew 16:21, 17:23, & 20:19,  The third day also speaks of resurrection life.
We are in a time of revival and restoration, and truly LIVING and thriving, not merely surviving. It is time to just DO whatever Jesus tells us, and thus see our “water” turned into wine!
So, on this Mother’s Day, as a Spiritual Mom, I speak blessing over you as we read this account between Jesus and His mother, and repeat to you what Mary said:
“Whatever He says to you, DO IT!”
And in the process, know that He will pour out the new wine into your relationship with him, the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon you, and His resurrection life to you, as well as to others THROUGH you!
Thank you, Jesus, for your promises. Forgive us for any lethargy due to the attacks of the enemy, and thank you for infusing us with your new wine – the anointing of Your Holy Spirit afresh in these times. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
